Things to do in Amsterdam

Things to do in Amsterdam

As you probably saw from my 800 Instagram photos, I love Amsterdam! I did have every intention to go back this year but I think I've ran out of time for the rest of the year and probably holiday money. Someone come with me next year pls. So after I've waffled about Amsterdam for months, I thought I would do a little round up post of the things you can do when you visit. We didn't get the chance to do everything, but I'm happy to visit more often and tick a little one off each time!

I've been to Amsterdam in both Winter and Summer, and although I'm a total Autumn lover I much prefer Amsterdam in the Summer time. It's warm, but not crazily warm, and nice and sunny to look around all the beautiful places in the City.

John Frieda Volume Essentials

John Frieda Luxurious Volume Range

If you want to keep your hair in good condition, a good shampoo and condition duo is always the best place to start. I can always feel a difference in my hair if I use a supermarket brand on my hair compared to named brands like John Frieda. It's like when you go to the hairdressers and you hair feels like silk then you wash it with some Herbal Essences and it feels rubbish again, so a good shampoo and conditioner makes a heap of difference.

Joan Collins Compact

Joan Collins Timeless Collection Crystal Compact

I've never owned a compact before, not even a Charlotte Tilbury one, how very non-blogger of me! I love how pretty they are, though I know they just hide in your bag, but can you imagine pulling this out your handbag? Better than me pulling out my 6 year old Mac pressed powder that I've hoarded. Probably about time I recycled that and replaced it with this. Plus it comes with the prettiest lipstick I think I've ever owned! I mean, how can this not be pretty if it's plated in gold?! And red lipsticks win every time anyway.

My Holiday Essentials

My holiday essentials

So as you read this I should hopefully be sitting on a beach in Turkey, it's somewhere I've never been before but heard great things. So why not try it out, and hopefully get a tan in the process..! It was quite a last minute booking, so I don't feel as prepared as I usually do. Have that gut feeling I may have left something behind.. but at least I have these babies. These are my essentials when going abroad, otherwise I would be like a prune!

Tangle Angel

Tangle Angel Brush Review

If you read here a little often, you'll have heard me waffle on about tangle brushes before (Tangle Teezer), but I'm always wanting to try new versions. This time it's the every so pretty Tangle Angel. Every time I go to my hairdressers she has a new gadget I want to add to my collection, though I'm yet to see her grab out a brush that looks quite like this! I mean how pretty is it? And it's pink so what more do I want? I've had my hands on this a few months now and it's made my hair feel so much softer. I think normal brushes create so many split ends, and I'm so stingey at getting my hair cut so this has helped loads!

My Favourite Bases - Purse Friendly Edit

My Favourite Bases - Purse Friendly Edit

I have quite a few foundations, albeit not half as much as EmmyWritesAbout, but I do have a little collection. I have some favourites which I continuously reach for, and a few I probably forget about and never use. These are the ones I'm loving, and probably have been for well over a year. They all have different uses, for me anyway, some are needed to last all day and some just for a quick base!

Skin Pharmacy Multivitamin Serum

Skin Pharmacy Multivitamin Serum

Well I think I've probably spent the past few weekends like a lobster, apparently I don't tan in England and only turn a bright shade of red! So my skin is in a desperate need of TLC, even more so today when I'm sporting a red nose! I'm all for trying out new skin care at the moment, there was one time where I wouldn't change my skin care routine for the world. But, I do think the older I get the more I need to concentrate on my skin more!

Change by Lisa Riley

Change by Lisa Riley

I love buying new perfumes, I think I actually have about 13 at the moment.. maybe I should probably stop. Every fragrance I have is pretty different, and what scent I wear depends on where I'm going or what I fancy. Sometimes it's sweet and floral, other times it's deep and musk, sometimes it's high end and sometimes it's a celebrity one. I do love a musky fragrance (Giorgio Armani Si is amazing), so this new one from Change by Lisa Riley is right up my street!

My Two Holy Grail Setting Sprays

Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray and Gerard Cosmetics Slay Spray

I literally couldn't cope without setting sprays, and no I'm not over exaggerating! My skin is super oily, so no matter how good my primer is I always need a setting spray to keep my foundation from going cakey and horrid! I remember once upon a time I used Fix+, which I now know isn't a setting spray, with my make up and it always went patchy in the afternoon. That was until I tried these two.

Ideal Girls Night In #2

Ideal Girls Night In Beauty Goodies

Nothing really beats a night in with your girls, this one may be a night in with the blogger girls but the same goes! I don't think my friends would complain about a night in that includes brownies. This is the second #IdealGirlsNightIn with Ideal World, the first one was so fun and I'm glad to be included in the second. I rarely get to join in chats anymore so I'm always looking forward to catch up!

Trying Out Oil Cleansing / Skin Gritting

Oil Cleansing / Skin Gritting

I always find that no matter what blackhead treatment you use they never seem to do it properly. And I'm definitely not one to try those blackhead masks as I don't want to ruin my skin in the process. So scrolling through Facebook like the morning paper when I saw an article by Metro on 'Skin Gritting'. I was intrigued, especially that for once I actually owned the products mentioned. It usually resorts in me spending £50 on some fancy mask that will do nothing anyway!

So...? Body Mists*

So...? Body Mists

Victorias Secret have always done my most favourite body sprays, but my nearest one is about 200 miles away so I can't remember the last time I ever bought one. Since then I have looking for some nice smelling ones that actually last and don't smell chemically. So the lovely bunch at So...? Fragrance sent me these beautiful smelling body mists and I've fallen in love.

Curated Combination Subscription Box

After trying Glossybox and Birchbox soo many times over and falling out of love with them more each time, I'm always a little dubious about subscription boxes now! I now know there is ones out there which are 1000x better and for only £12.50 a month. This was the first I had heard about the Curated Combination Box, but I was already in love with it as soon as I'd opened it.

Skin Chemists Advanced Snail Duo Moisturiser*

Skin Chemists Snail Duo Moisturiser review

So it's now getting towards that nice sunny weather.. well on most days anyway. This is calling for some lighter moisturisers under my thicker foundations (double wear I see you) for the warmer weather. Having thick bases under a high coverage foundation always sends my skin crazy in the heat, or I look like a witch who's melting. Not a good look really.. So a light moisturiser really helps to keep my skin hydrated but not cakey.

Bondi Sands Liquid Gold

Bondi Sands Liquid Gold

Here I am, weeks after vowing to not use Cocoa Brown anymore, now trying to find a good fake tan again. Everyone told me to grab this on Twitter, so there was enough persuasion as I needed (not much). I've been meaning to try Bondi Sands for ages but there is so many different ones in their range I never knew which was the best, and the thought of an oil scared me too!

Weekend in Amsterdam

Weekend in Amsterdam

Yep I've probably bored you all to death on Twitter talking about this in the weeks leading up to it and now the week after. But I literally loved every single moment in Amsterdam, and I also got to meet some amazing bloggers for the first time! (Ashton Jade, Kirsty Leanne and Laura). I think I even surprised my friends flying off to Amsterdam on my own some, I'm the friend who won't even go through McDonalds drive through on my own, so this was a big step for me. Now it's one I want to do all the time! Someone be my travel buddy!

I have been to Amsterdam before back in 2014 for my Dads 50th birthday, and I loved it then too and always wanted to go back! The first time I stayed pretty central but this time we stayed out of town in at the Teleport Hotel in Sloterdijk, which was only one train stop away from Centraal so it was perfect. I would happily stay there again if I went back!

Cause Amsterdam is so picturesque I had to take photos everywhere! So I'm going to do a brief little photo diary of what I love to do when visiting!

The Canals

Weekend in Amsterdam
Weekend in Amsterdam
Weekend in Amsterdam

You will obviously always have to visit the Canals, if you don't.. were you even in Amsterdam?! I could probably stroll around there every day forever, it's just so laid back and pretty! We pretty much spent our time wandering up and down Warmoesstraat and stopping for the occasional drink, yes it was prosecco and 11am. But nothing beats people watching with a cocktail or a glass of prosecco to sit with, no matter what the time.

Food

Weekend in Amsterdam
Photo courtesy of Ashton Jade (I was the hand model for the weekend)

I could have probably came back from Amsterdam 10 stone heavier if we had been there a bit longer, there is food everywhere. By everywhere, I mean there is literally a pizza shop or a waffle shop every 5 shops, or cheesy chips those were good too! We didn't spend much time eating 'out out' in Amsterdam, most were snacks along the way so we could try everything. Or just to pack into our bags to eat when we got back to the room.

When in Amsterdam you must try the cheesy chip cones and Nutella waffles/pancakes.. they are amazing. We got ours just down past the Red Light District and they were soo good!

Museums

Weekend in Amsterdam

This time round we only did 1 museum, which is the one you have to do if you are going to have the true Amsterdam experience. The Sex Museum! It was literally as corny as you could imagine it to be, and as funny! There is no souvenir better than your photo with a giant penis..

We were intending to go to the Anne Frank museum but it was sold out before we even got there, so definitely book your tickets well before your trip!

My first trip I did Madamme Tussauds and I loved it, but seeing as the weather was so amazing it seemed a waste to spend 2 hours indoors! But you definitely need your typical E.T. photo from here.

Cafes

Weekend in Amsterdam

If you really want the full experience you definitely need to go to the Bulldog Cafe. We all grabbed a 'space cake' and sat and ate it out in the sun. But apart from them making a damn good Ginger cake, I think that was probably about it!

Iamsterdam sign

Weekend in Amsterdam

Cliche, but we had to go. It's one of those places that isn't all that exciting once you get there. There was people e v e r y w h e r e, and yes I know its a tourist attraction but I didn't expect people to be on the sign (ha)! It's still a lovely pretty place where you can go grab some waffles and visit the Banksy museum (that's on my list for next time).

So yes, my Instagram will be inundated with pretty building photos until someone takes me on my next trip. Where to go next?!

Tarte Maneater Collection

QVC Tarte Maneater Collection

So when this goes live I'll be in Amsterdam with some of the blog girls, but that is a post for when I get back! But this post is based on my other blog girls influencing me to get this, I mean when everyone was going on about this I just couldn't resist! I mean, how couldn't I? What spending ban was I on? Forgot about that.. But technically this was a bargain as QVC had it up for £43! Now, can I buy all the other collections too..

Which mascara is best?

Choosing the best mascara
Choosing the best mascara

So the other week I thought I would go through my eyeliners to find the best one in my battle of the eyeliners post, and now I'm doing a mascara version! I hate trying new mascaras, it's just not exciting. I mean how much more fun is it to try a new lipstick or eyeshadow palette. It's rare you'll get a 'oo your mascara looks lovely today' comment, but without it you also feel like your eyes are the size of a pea. So it's still an essential!

Change of season skin care

Change of season skin care needs

I really hate this time of year for skin care, I literally hate taking care of my skin.. ridiculous really when it's something I probably should take care of. But the transition from Winter to Spring makes me skin soooo dry. Fake tan probably doesn't help matters but I have just switched to a oil fake tan so lets see if that helps, but thats for another post.

Battle of the liquid eyeliners

My favourite liquid eyeliners
My favourite liquid eyeliners

Eyeliners have always been a struggle for me, I am forever looking for one that actually does what it says.. or doesn't dry up after 1 use. Apparently when I was an emo it didn't matter what a liquid liner was like cause I coloured my whole eyelid in it, least then I didn't have to try and perfect a cat flick without it sensing my fear. It does actually sense your fear, I'm not even kidding.

I'm still trying to find the 'best' liner, but I think I have found one or two I will continue to keep buying until that one is ever found. Hence the if.

Aveika Restaurant, Newcastle*

Aveika Japanese restaurant Newcastle

I'm easily led by food, hence the 3 cakes and bacon sandwiches I ate this morning when I was meant to be 'starting my diet'.. that old chestnut. But when I had the opportunity to go try out Aveika I didn't even question it twice! I absolutely love Japanese food, but very few people I know do so I never get to try places out. So me and one of the work girls popped down for some stress relieving cocktails and food for a Thursday night!

Kat Von D X Too Faced Better Together Set

Too Faced x KVD Better Together Set
Too Faced x KVD Better Together Set

It's not new news that I love Too Faced, but I have been on a spending ban lately seeing as I've just booked Amsterdam and Iceland. I should probably actually save some money to go to these places! But when I saw this KVD x Too Faced Better Together set on Lady Writes blog I knew I needed to grab it. I know I already have heaps of KVD liquid lipsticks, but I don't have this shade yet so I wasn't duplicating myself!

This set is £33, which I think is pretty cheap considering what you get to try, albeit they're minis but still a cheaper alternative than buying the whole sets full size. Plus you get this little cute make up bag which I could resist, I love Piaf!

Afternoon Tea at The Great British Cupcakery

Afternoon tea at the Great British Cupcakery, NewcastleAfternoon tea at the Great British Cupcakery, Newcastle

So eventually, after months upon months of wanting to go here I eventually went to The Great British Cupcakery in Newcastle. It's a cute and quirky shabby chic cafe near the Quayside in Newcastle, for someone who lives 30 minutes away I rarely get to go into the city and try all the different foodie places. I really need to do it more!

Skin Chemists Bee Venom Serum *Plus giveaway*

Skin Chemists Bee Venom Facial Serum review

Now I don't think I've ever been so happy to receive some moisturiser, usually a lipstick makes me happy not skin care (I neglect that). But I just ran out of my beloved Caviar serum from Skin Chemists and I was gutted! I don't know why I seem to prefer serums to moisturises, I love the gel like texture on your skin in the mornings, so refreshing.. and I'm not a morning person so I need as much help as I can get!

Girls Night in with Ideal World

Ideal Girls Night In Necessities
Ideal Girls Night In Necessities

I love a good night in with the girls, though they never end a night in that often.. usually we end up in the pub at 11pm after a few too many glasses of wine.. woops! I feel like I'm missing out now I'm thinking about it, is there any better nights than watching a rubbish film, with a face mask, stuffing your face with food with your besties. We usually save those days for hungover Sundays, but Ideal World are hosting a girls night in tonight and I can't wait!

Too Faced Pink Duo

Too Faced Peony lipstick and Justify My Love blush duo

Yet again I'm babbling about lipsticks.. but I have thrown a blush in here for good measure for once! These two beauties from Too Faced are absolutely perfect for Spring too so I'm definitely going to get a lot more use out of them now it's not so gloomy! I actually got this as a set at Christmas, hence the teeny tiny Justify My Love blush but these sets are my favourite way to try out different shades.

Rimmel Brow This Way Eyebrow Shaker Powder

I'm usually pretty picky when it comes to eyebrow products, I have religiously stuck with Dipbrow since I bought it (yes I have the same one from 2014.. don't judge). But I was pretty intrigued when I got to try these Brow This Way shake powders from the lovely bunch at Rimmel, I hadn't even seen them before but everyone at work seemed excited to see how I found them. They're only £5.99 too so a fraction of any ABH powders, which I do love, but these are on par with!

Current go-to liquid lipsticks

My favourite liquid lipsticks - Colourpop, Kat Von D, Too Faced and Lime Crime

Yes, I waffle on and on about liquid lipsticks every other post. But I'm yet to find anything better to rave about lipstick wise, I just can't get enough of them. I'm actually delving out of boring you constantly with Kylie and Colourpop every time.. so luckily Kat Von D and Too Faced have snuck in there with my current favourites to even it out for once. All of these are actually relatively new in my collection, especially the Lime Crime which may have snuck into a Christmas order..

My favourite liquid lipsticks - Colourpop, Kat Von D, Too Faced and Lime Crime

I only recently babbled about my Colourpop and Kat Von D lipsticks but these two are the ones I grab the most. These all really have quite different formulas and longevity, but I prefer each one for completely different reasons.

Kat Von D - Plath is swiftly becoming one of my favourite shades, I literally can't get enough of browns. This one is just a mini KVD lipstick as I'm yet to buy a full size one, but it's just the same and easier to carry about. This lasts me around 4+ hours, maybe more if I would stop gobbling food 24/7. It's also so easy to reapply without going clumpy or patchy!

Lime Crime - This is my first ever Lime Crime product, don't get me wrong I've wanted to try this brand for aaaaaggessss. Everyone went through a phase of boycotting these so I was always unsure until I spied them on Beauty Bay! Now I can't stop wearing it, I think I went through a phase of wearing it every single day when I bought it. This literally lasts me all day, unless I eat anything super greasy. My faaaavee!

Colourpop - Screenshot is the best Colourpop investment I think I may have ever made! It's pretty obvious I love Colourpop anyway as my Instagram is constantly filled with it but this is the best shade I've bought. It doesn't dry out my lips and it lasts all day! Out of this bunch this is my most favourite just because the shade is so wearable and lasts so long. Perfect for a long day at work and university!

Too Faced - These have the most unusual texture, but they're probably one of my favourites. The reason I may grab for others more often is that this lipstick doesn't last longer than a few hours, although it is matte it doesn't dry completely so there is a little transfer. But, it's so moisturising I couldn't fault it! This has been the best and easiest lipstick to wear in Winter, plus it's dinky and easy to throw into your bag.

Skin Chemists Rose Quartz Facial Oil

Skin Chemists Rose Quartz Age Defence Youth Facial Oil

Face oils used to really freak me out, mostly cause I have oily skin. Oil and oil?!? Really? But yes, really! This Rose Quartz oil has won me over completely. I tried out another brand recently which I did love but it had the weirdest smell ever that it put me off using it, this on the other had has such a light floral smell. Don't let the 'rose' put you off, I hate really floral scented products, especially for my face, and this doesn't bother me in the slightest and to be honest I can barely smell the scent!

Maybe it's just me, or maybe everyone else is in the same boat as me but are just better at tackling it than I am. But.. I just can't get into blogging any more!? I love it, but lately I just feel like all the engagement is gone and it's all going slightly downhill (well here it is anyway). The cutest Tangle Teezer

Pug Tangle Teezer

Tangle Teezers aren't something new to me, I already have one that my hairdresser insisted I needed as my hair is a constant knot. But my current Tangle Teezer is plain and black compared to this, how cute is this!! This one is quite a mini one compared to my other too, this one is so much easier to throw into your handbag for the day or if you're off travelling somewhere. It also has a cover so it doesn't entangle in things in your handbag, or for me.. impale me in my finger nails like my comb does every single time.
